On December 20, 2019, President Trump signed the government’s must-have, year-end spending bill, the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020, into law. The last minute addition of the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act provisions to the spending bill means a landslide of retirement policy changes, many of which are effective in 2020. The new law makes broad changes to almost all aspects of the U.S. retirement system. Investors as well as everyone in the retirement services industry will likely be affected to some degree as a result of the comprehensive provisions that impact IRAs, 403(b) plans, 401(k) plans and 529 plans.
